Great course introducing you to coloured pencils, I founded the sections on materials on what you take out with you very helpful. The detail shown drawing the fox and building the colours up was amazing. The outdoor drawing was inspiring demonstrating how you can draw a basic outline while your out with the subject in front of you adding colour and then finishing it at home.

This was a very thorough course and I'll be rewatching these lessons as I develop my skills. I hadn't seen the graphite over coloured pencil before and the Inktense + pencil bonus lesson was great too. Oh! The bokeh background with pencil shavings was very interesting...I've done similar type backgrounds with pan pastels (very fast and easy, but the downside is you have to seal the work to keep the pastel from getting all over everything!)

Alex Boon

Nature Journaling Educator

Alex Boon is an artist and nature journaling educator from East Devon, UK. He earned a PhD in environmental science before working in postdoctoral research and scientific communication roles. Alex left academia, moved to the rural south-west of the UK, and started his first nature journal in 2016. He now teaches both online and in-person workshops and courses and is active on YouTube and Instagram. He is the author of two books, "How to Draw a Tree" and "How to Draw a River", both published by David & Charlies in July 2025. His style is inspired by the British tradition of artists recording nature, particularly Edith Holden, Beatrix Potter, and Charles Tunnicliffe. His mission is to promote the wider uptake of nature journaling in the UK.
